Our Mission
"Arizona White Mountains Save Open Spaces" is a community-based group of concerned citizens and visitors in and around Apache County Arizona. Our mission is to preserve and protect the fragile grasslands, volcanic fields and open woodlands of the White Mountains. We are here to educate and inform our community and elected officials of the long-term, harmful impact from wind and solar farms on all aspects. We are banding together to safeguard our precious heritage, landscape and culture for many generations to come.
Our Focus
A Global Corporation, Repsol/Lava Run LLC (aka ConnectGen), is planning a wind farm and solar field along AZ US 60 spanning 10 miles between Springerville and Vernon. This area is approximately 10 miles long stretching from Mile Markers 370 to 380. Repsol/Lava Run LLC has been "courting" the State of Arizona and it's officials and scouting this area for a few years. They have plans to insert a 112+ wind turbine field along this route. They also have plans to install a massive solar field in the vicinity. The area proposed is precious grazing and hunting lands, not to mention the 3rd largest volcanic field in the continental United States. It would be on the back of Green's Peak and spreading over some of the most pristine and beautiful vistas and valleys leading into Round Valley.
We want to stop that from happening.
We can do it TOGETHER with passion and tenacity.
Repsol/Lava Run LLC is "promising" reclamation of their equipment constructed on the ground but none of what is under the surface.
Ask them and then tell them "we need that in writing."
Our Concerns
Repsol/Lava Run LLC is proposing alternative energy projects that cause irreparable damage to delicate ecosystems. This includes wind turbines and solar panel installations which are environmentally invasive on a massive scale. Miles of trenching for connecting cables, huge laydown yards, new power substations, on-site concrete plant(s), high voltage power lines AND millions of gallons of water from precious aquifers are needed for these projects. IMAGINE networks of newly constructed roads for countless trips of heavy equipment and water trucks destroying delicate soils and vegetation over ancient lava fields. Migratory paths for birds, bats and wildlife will be changed forever. Majestic views and "dark skies" will NEVER be here again. Hunting, tourism and recreation bring more money to Apache County than any other industries combined. That would be a heavy financial hit to the county and the local economy.
There is no going back if these projects move in.
"FOREVER" is a long time...well, it's forever.
Lava Run's Proposed Area for Development
Repsol/ConnectGen/Lava Run LLC wants to install a 2 Phase Wind & Solar Project. This is THEIR map with OUR arrows to show you how close they want to build to crucial areas in and around Springerville, AZ. Their project would include 112+ wind turbines (reaching 654 feet in height), a massive solar field, high tension power lines, electrical substations, concrete plant, and much more. The yellow dots on the left show their wind turbine plan for the South side of Highway 60 and the purple dots are wind turbines on the North side. The solar field would be up behind the key by the Springerville Generating Station (SGS) but apparently they didn't want you to see that. This is NOT okay and we have to fight to keep them out. Meet Trinidad & Henry. If you haven't met them already, you might run into them around the area. They are 2 of the faces behind Repsol Renewables (A Global Corporation). You may also meet Mark "The VP" as things heat up around here. They like to answer questions with vague answers. They know NOTHING about our delicate environment and they do not care. Ask them and they will tell you to your face. They know A LOT about our "poor' county and they are preying on Apache County for it's easy pickings.
These people and the corporation they work for are not a golden goose.
They are a curse.
Do not accept their "magic beans".
